Steve Maxwell Training UFC fighter Diego Sanchez!

Posted in: Inspiration, Training |

After attending Steve Maxwell’s Joint Mobility workshop last summer, I knew that the ole’ Coach knew his stuff.  So, when he offered a certification as a body weight trainer, under his system, I didn’t hesitate to sign up.

As I detailed in my two part report, the certification process was not easy, but I needed the challenge.  I plan on going for either a KB certification with Steve in 2010 and/or pick up the Level II Body weight Trainer’s certification.  I’ll keep you guys posted.

However, as a MMA fanatic, you can guess that I was really excited when Steve started posting training videos on his youtube channel of him training Diego Sanchez.  For those of you who follow the sport, you know that Diego Sanchez is fighting the “prodigy” BJ Penn for his belt in a couple of months.

Honestly, I’m not that surprised that Steve is working with Diego, and other mixed martial artists, because he walks the walk and practices what he preaches.  More importantly, he can convey the information in a way that anyone can understand, which is a plus in the fitness industry since everyone usually talks as if they have two Ph.Ds in kinesiology ;)

OK, here are some videos of Steve training Diego.  What I love about these videos is that Steve is following his system of training to the tee.  What he has Diego doing in the videos below are based on the same principles he teaches in his workshops.  Obviously, they are effective, and I can’t wait to see how Diego does against BJ.

Let me know what you guys think of the videos …

Nothing against Diego he’s a good fighter but man does Steve make the push up on KBs look so easy! I guess it can be said that even many MMA fighters arent in the same physical condition as Steve. Incredible.

MMA fighters or 99.9% of the guys in his age range! As I mentioned in my certification report, Steve smoked EVERYONE who attended. This was my second workshop with him and at both of them, there were guys of all ages and fitness levels, and they couldn’t hang with him. This guy is definitely a dynamo!

Man…that looks TOUGH, to me! But then again, these fighters are made out of iron, to begin with :)

All of the videos from Mr. Maxwell are really impressive. No fancy workout products, just down to earth work.

Good luck with certification, Muata. I know you’re a fan of kettle bells and thick handles. Any recommendations on what kind to get or even home made versions? I’ve always wanted a boxer’s physique, particularly Manny Pacquiao since we’re probably around the same height and build.

Mark, thanks and I’ll definitely keep you guys posted about the certification process. Honestly, if you want to train with thick-handles, I strongly suggest that you build your own. While there are many exercises that feel more natural using a KB (e.g., clean and press), they can get pretty expensive. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for KBs, try craig’s list in your city. If you go with the cheapest KBs, then they’ll probably be Apollos. Just make sure that you carry a bathroom scale with you to make sure that the weight are correct. I had a pair of 62# KBs and one weighed 61, while the other one weighed 65#! Oh, Manny has a great physique and to see the type of definition that he has, you MUST have sub-10% bodyfat … Thanks for leaving a comment.

Oh and I have to do it… those workouts look like a “nightmare” to the inexperienced.

Yep in that kind of training fighers are looking for any edge. It is kind of interesting to see all of the non-traditional strength and aligity exercises. I’ve see tractor tires, sledge hammers and such.

By the way are you going to watch Fedor Emelianenko v. Brett Rogers? Should be a fun fight… Fedor generally figures out how to get the W but he has some weaknesses (not that his opponents seem to find them). Brett is still the unknown as he took the championship kind of unexpectedly to me from Arlovski with a decisive knock out in the first round.

Anyway the fight is on CBS Saturday night (Nov 7).

John, what’s really funny is that all the “non-traditional” exercises that Maxwell takes Diego through are actually no that new, and they were used by many old time bodybuilders and strong men of old. I love the internet because I would have never “discovered” that there’s really nothing new under the proverbial sun ;) Kettlebells are far from new and didn’t originate in Russia; the same can be said for using sledge hammers, sandbags, anvils, etc. Oh, and I’m going to blog about how Edward Checkley showed how to do “Hindu Squats” in his book that was first published in 1910! The more I read training courses from the early 20th century, the more I realize that all these “new” training techniques are far from it.

Oh yeah, I’m definitely going to watch Fedor’s fight. Honestly, I have not followed his career that closely, and I’ve only seen his fights with Hong Man Choi, Tim Sylvia, and Arlovski, which isn’t a list of top MMA heavyweights IMO. I don’t think that Brett has the ground game that Fedor has, but I really hope that he can land a couple of good right hands on Fedor to see what happens. I remember Fedor getting pretty bruised up when he fought the 7′2 giant in Dream a couple of years ago. So, I’ll be watching to see what happens, but, more importantly, I think the under-card should be pretty decent. I can’t wait to see the Jake Shields vs. Jason Miller fight, and I think that Mousasi is a BEAST! So, I’ll be watching it with you my friend … ;)
