S.U.M.O Monday

Posted in: Inspiration, Training |

Last year, I went to my 20 year Congressional Page Reunion in Washington, DC.  It was really an interesting experience because a lot of folks I hadn’t seen since I was 16!

Anyway, one of my good friends, whom I actually stayed in touch with after leaving Capitol Hill, and her husband had just had weight loss surgery.  Now, while I’m not a big fan of WLS, I’ve lived long enough to know that the only life I can live is my own.

So, what path someone takes to losing fat is just that: another path.

Well, they are educators like I am, so we swapped the usual, “Why can’t I kill my students?” stories, when my friend’s husband mentioned the acronym S.U.M.O.

He said that when his students start to complain about getting too much work, he tells them S(uck it) U(p and) M(ove) O(n)!

OK, it may not be a perfect acronym, but I thought it was a great reminder that there are going to be times when you just have to do something that you don’t really feel like doing.

Well, today is a S.U.M.O Monday for me because I really don’t feel like leaving the warmth of my office to go and train in my very chilly garage.

I could think of a countless number of things I could be doing instead of training, and believe me, they all have crossed my mind! (Including going back to bed and cudding with my wife and son …)

But, you know just when I was about to throw in the towel and put today’s training session off for tomorrow, I remembered S.U.M.O!

So, as I close this post, I’m grabbing my tripod, flip share video-camera, mp3, and skull cap and heading off to my garage to stimulate some muscular growth!

It’s funny how the mind works. In the past, I would definitely gave in to the mind and would of just watched TV instead of working out. Now, I feel that I won’t allow myself to put it off. It’s all in the mind. Great post.

Thanks JW and you’re absolutely right. We have far more control over ALL of our actions than we think. Fat loss is 80-90% mental …

“SUMO” – this works for me. I imagine one of those elephant-sized Japanese Sumo wrestlers who always seem to have a aura of intense focused calm who walk in the ring and just do what Sumo’s do. I bet their training is all SUMO.

Donald, those guys are so flexible that it’s not even funny. One great bodyweight exercise is the Sumo squat, complete with thigh smacking and all … Do a search on Google to see how it’s done.
