Dr. Kal Chinyere (Lost 130+ Pounds!)

Posted in: Inspiration |

While I’ve really enjoyed being able to be Mr. Low Body Fat the majority of this summer, the reality is that I’m a teacher and the Fall semester starts today.  So, I now have to split my time with my day job, which pays the bills.  Does this mean that I’m leaving you guys and abandoning my blog?

Of course not!

It just means that since I have to be very organized with my time, you guys may benefit from getting posts earlier than planned, which is a good thing.  For instance, I’ve decided not to wait until the first of next month to release my latest addition to my Fat Loss Stories of Inspiration series.  Also, I’ve decided to release my inaugural edition of my newsletter Feed Your Brain to Lose the Fat a week early too!  So, be sure to click on the Newsletter link under my logo.

Well, the darkside of me going back to work is that I won’t always have time to answer your emails right away, but I promise that I will continue to blog no less than once a week.  OK, let’s move on with the incredible story of Dr. Kal Chinyere . . .

* * *

When my wife and I visited the CNN building in June, Matt, one of the producers of CNN’s FitNation, told me about another person he’d interviewed who had also lost over 100 pounds.  What was really interesting about this person’s story is that he was a MD.  I couldn’t wait to get back to my brother’s house to watch his interview.

Well, when I watched Dr. Kal Chinyere’s interview, I was blown away by his incredible 130+ pound transformation!  This led me to get in touch with Kal, so that I could spotlight his success and ask him for information that will help you guys on your own fat loss journey.  I’m just really happy that Kal agreed to answer the following questions.  Enjoy …

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN ON THIS FAT-LOSS JOURNEY?

As a Resident Physician working in Brooklyn, NY, I worked at a hospital where many of my patients were dying from obesity related diseases.  I didn’t want to become a statistic.

I had struggled with weight my entire life and tried to lose the weight for appearances.  This time I decided to lose weight for my health.

WHAT NUTRITIONAL PLAN (SOME PEOPLE SAY “DIET”) DO YOU FOLLOW?

To lose the weight I followed a low glycemic load nutrition plan that I designed myself after doing months of research.  I didn’t have much money so I had to design a plan that worked and was inexpensive.  I now call the plan, The Don’t Go Broke Diet.

I ate lean proteins, good carbs, and good fats.

DID YOU SET A GOAL FOR YOURSELF? IF SO, WHAT WAS IT?

I set small goals along the way.  My scale at home only went up to 330 pounds, so for a very long time I had no idea how much I weighed.  I just knew it was more than 330.

My first goal was to weigh 329.  My second goal was 299.  Then 274, 249, 224 and then 199.  My goal now is to get to 179, then build muscle.  I want to be 200 pounds and 9% body fat when I’m all done.  Then I’ll just maintain.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF ACTUALLY STARTING YOUR JOURNEY?

The hardest part for me at the start was just believing I could do it.  I had been obese for so long that I actually started to believe that God wanted me to be obese.  Once I started to believe in myself, the rest just followed.

DID YOUR FRIENDS/FAMILY OFFER YOU SUPPORT?

My friends and family were very supportive.  They encouraged me along the way and applauded me as I achieved my goals.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NEW MORE HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES YOU NOW MAKE? FAVORITES?

Lean steaks.  Whey protein smoothies.  Omelets.  Lettuce wraps.

WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT WEIGHT? HOW ARE YOU KEEPING THE FAT OFF?

My current weight is 198.  I am keeping the weight off by strength training regularly and limiting the carbs, especially the high glycemic carbs.  I have 20 pounds to lose in the next 40 weeks so I’m working hard.

BESIDES OBVIOUSLY FEELING HEALTHIER, WHAT KIND OF CHANGES HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY AFTER YOUR FAT-LOSS?

I am so much happier.  My self esteem and confidence have gone through the roof.  Physically, I move better and quicker.  My body no longer feels sluggish.

WHAT KIND OF REACTIONS DO YOU GET NOW?

Friends and family who haven’t seen me in a while are always surprised.  Everyone always wants to know the “secret” or wants to know if I had surgery.  People who I have recently met can’t believe that I used to weigh more than 330 pounds.

ANY TIPS/ WORDS OF ADVICE YOU WOULD OFFER SOMEBODY TRYING TO LOSE FAT?

The 3 P’s of weight loss:

  • Plan – Weight loss will not happen by accident.  You must plan every aspect of it.  You should even plan when you are going to cheat.
  • Persevere – You will have set backs.  I have had and continue to have setbacks.  Expect failures, but get over them.
  • Patience – It takes time.  Don’t rush it.  The slower you lose the weight, the longer it will stay off.  You didn’t gain the weight in one day, so don’t expect to lose it in one day either.

As with many of the guys that I’ll be highlighting, Kal has started a blog about his weight loss experience, his diet, and many other practical fat loss tips.  Judging by his incredible transformation, I’d say that he knows a thing or two about losing fat!

Hey, if you haven’t done so already, I strongly suggest you go and start a free blog to track your journey. If you do, feel free to send me the link because I’m in the process of starting a blogroll for guys who have started blogs about their fat loss.

Hey Muata, I got here from Israel’s link to your blog and I’m really liking what I am reading so far.

Guys like you who have started big and worked hard to get in shape (not just normal, but actually thin & in shape) are such motivations for guys like myself who are still in the think of it.

I topped out the beginning of this year at 440 pounds. Eight months later, I’m a hundred pounds down and am looking to be under 300 in time for my sister’s wedding in December.

Check out my weight loss blog if you’d like and feel free to add it to your blogroll!

    Hi Muata,

Talk about inspiring – wow! As so many that have lost weight, they have come up with a method that works for them. I especially like Dr. Kal’s 3 P’s. I’ve blogged about a similar approach tonight.

Always informational and interesting… hang in there during your new school year and maybe take advantage of future date options in wordpress (so you can write a couple now and publish one of them scheduled later).

It’s funny that you mentioned the future date option because I’ve been using it for my last two posts … Great minds think a like, eh? Take care …
